How it works

I provide a flexible service, working with you to get your message across in print or on the web. I deal with a wide range of clients, from companies to self publishing authors, so it doesn’t make sense to offer fixed packages. The lists below give an idea of the sort of ground I cover to help in  your quality control process. For more practical details, please click here.

Proofreading

Basic proofreading checks grammar, spelling and punctuation. I can also look at issues like:

  • is the layout consistent, including fonts, justification, and headings?
  • are the page numbers visible and consecutive?
  • are cross references within the document consistent, including the with the table of contents?
  • is any maths that is shown is correct? For example that a column of figures adds up to the total shown?
  • for a website, do internal links work correctly and are images showing well.

Editing

As part of the editing process I can look at:

  • does the writing flow, or does the sentence structure need improvement?
  • is your document is too wordy?
  • does the structure of the document help the message?
  • is the language is appropriate for your intended audience?
  • have you included technical jargon when you are communicating with the general public?
  • are there any redundant words or duplication?
  • overall, is your message clear?
  • if word count (or space occupied) is important, how can it be reduced to the target?

Writing

If you don’t have time to write for yourself, I can help to bring more resource into your team. I can help in all sorts of ways, including:

  • tidying up notes you have written.
  • re-purposing material you already have, for example converting a blog post into a newsletter article.
  • writing material after a discussion.

Note: Although I may highlight facts that strike me as odd, I cannot take responsibility for checking the facts in a document.

“I worked with Sarah for a number of years. She was always able to edit and improve documents, making them clearer, more precise and easier to read. She met deadlines and was always good to work with.”
